“Social isolation among older people is a huge problem,” Jodeane Anderson, the program manager for Living Care Home Care Services Maitland, said.
Home Care is a government-funded service that assists 28 locals still living in their home.
“We do a lot in people’s homes but we wanted to create a new program for the people we see,” Ms Anderson said.
The new weekly program Knit and Knatter is a chance for elderly people to get out of the house and socialise.
“A lot of older people are reluctant to socialise whether it is because of social issues or things they read in the paper.”
Not just for women, men have attended the group for a chat and a bit of craft.
Sandra Leedham and Mavis Gray were two of the participants at the first Knit and Knatter last Tuesday.
“We’ve giggled all day,” Ms Leedham said.
“I do appreciate it, I really enjoy it,” Ms Gray said.
The service also requires male volunteers to interact with some male clients on a one-on-one basis. Interested volunteers can call Living Care Home Care Services Maitland 4990 3480.
