Surrounded by gum trees and next door to the school, golf course and cricket ground 16-year-old boxers William Grey, Tom Darlington and Blake Tindall are put through their paces.
It is a familiar setting for Tindall, a Paterson boy under the tutelage of his father Greg and older brother John.
But for Grey and Darlington it has come to feel like home, travelling over an hour to sharpen their skills in the ring.
Grey hails from Stroud and Darlington from Booral with the pair of them catching a bus to Dungog High School and then to Paterson for a session before being collected by their parents.
Grey has been involved the longest, 18 months, and was successful in his sixth career bout at Maitland City Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club on Saturday night by accounting for the Central Coast’s Jacob Clarke.
Tindall, in his second fight after 12 months in the gym, defeated Umina’s Jake Gracek in a split point decision.
Darlington was beaten on debut by Joel Robinson of the Central Coast.
Both Tindall and Grey attended the national Golden Gloves in Brisbane recently. Their next bouts will be at Cessnock next month.
