Maitland Redbacks’ over-30 women’s side have flown the flag at the 2014 Hunter Western Hornets Regional Championships held at Maitland Park over the weekend.

Teams from across the Hunter and from as far as Dubbo and the Great Lakes descended on Maitland for the event, with men and women competing across 10 different divisions.
After finishing with two wins and three losses from a combined women’s open division the Redbacks went on to claim a 6-5 grand final victory over Wallsend to claim the over-30 title.
Maitland’s over-30 men also went close to grand final glory after winning four of five group games on Saturday, scoring 28 tries in the process.
They continued their form with a 4-1 win over Newcastle City in the semi-final, but were stopped 7-7 in the decider by Wallsend.
Beresfield were another side to taste success over the weekend, with the Bandits’ under-20 side going undefeated through the tournament and edging out Nelson Bay 7-6 in the grand final.
In the open men’s division Maitland found the going difficult on their own turf, suffering 8-6 and 8-1 losses to the two Doyalson outfits and an 8-4 loss to Newcastle City, who went on to lose 7-3 to Doyalson in the decider.
