Allie, a female, was found still alive in her mother’s pouch as she lay in the middle of the road.
Hunter Valley Zoo keeper Amanda Chisholm came upon the dead wombat after returning from a Ronald McDonald House charity function.
“I was driving at night about seven months ago when I saw the wombat lying in the road,” Ms Chisholm said.
“I stopped and checked the mum’s body as I always do when I find dead creatures and, sure enough, there was a little bundle in her pouch.
“The baby wombat was very quiet as I reached into mum’s pouch and gently drew her out.
“I was very relieved too when I found she had not been hurt.
“I took her home and she is like a little baby now, following me everywhere.
“Allie sleeps in bed with me at night too.
“She is not a problem because she nods off straight away.
Over time, Ms Chisholm said Allie had become very spoilt.
“She drinks four bottles of special wombat milk every day and loves eating Weetbix cereal. She doesn’t like her vegies though.”
And then there’s Axel, a male wombat that was taken to the zoo after he was found in his dead mum’s pouch after she was struck by a vehicle.
“Axel is a bit fiery and the two don’t get along very well, so they have to sleep in different places,” Ms Chisholm said.
While Allie snuggles up in bed, Axel sleeps downstairs on a big rug.
“They both survived traumatic times and now they live well here” Ms Chisholm said.
