Probationary Constable Bower graduated from the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn on Friday and spent yesterday enjoying his first day on the beat at Maitland.
The 33-year-old graduated alongside about 300 others as part of Class 323, with an Associate Degree in Policing Practice.
The Newcastle man said he was thrilled to be starting his new career.
“It was a more recent decision, I was contemplating it for years,” Probationary Constable Bower said.
“I just thought I’d apply and jump on the opportunity. I wish I’d done it earlier now.”
He said he was pleased to be working so close to home.
“I’m over the moon to be up here,” Probationary Constable Bower said.
“I’m very lucky, I’m expecting it will be very busy, especially for the first 12 months, but I’m just looking forward to serving the community of Maitland.”
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said the area was a perfect place for a new officer.
“It is a wonderful area to up-skill and train; there are some exceptional police here,” Inspector Zdrilic said.
“There is a nice blend of good, experienced officers, but it’s also quite a busy station.
“We’ve always got a fair bit of work on and there is a good cross section of people to deal with.
“Central Hunter is certainly fertile ground for officers learning the job.”
Inspector Zdrilic said he was happy to have another officer on deck.
“A hundred per cent, we’re always happy to welcome new police here,” he said.
Probationary Constable Bower said he had enjoyed his time at the academy.
“The academy was very good, very busy and physically it was really hard,” he said.
“There was also a lot of study in the first session.
“The second session had a more practical element to it.
“Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming here [in Maitland] so far. I’m looking forward to getting out there.”
