In keeping with this mousy rule of thumb, The Star introduces its pets of the week.
Seven to be precise and all of them brothers.
Fuzzbutt, Christofur, Tacco Salad, Moose, Bam Bam, Tazzie Boo Boo and Bing Bing are six weeks old and ready for adoption from the Hunter RSPCA Shelter, Rutherford.
They can be adopted individually or in multiples and come treated for mites and fleas.
At such a young age, these mice are easy to handle and will take well to training.
Small children should only play with mice under supervision because they are easily hurt.
A specialised cage is essential to keep mice to protect them from the elements and provides them with space to play, eat and exercise.
Mice love to climb and chew so ropes, ladders and chew blocks are essential.
At rest, it is important for them to have a dark, comfortable enclosed area.
The cage will need to be chew proof, escape proof and will require daily cleaning.
Mice need a balanced diet.
This usually consists of a mix of custom pellets, hay, raw fruit and vegetables.
Adequate supplies of clean fresh water are also essential.
Their individual adoption fee is $6.
For more information or to meet the mice, call into the Hunter RSPCA Shelter at Burlington Close between 9.30am and 3.30pm from Wednesday to Monday (closed Tuesday) or call 4939 1555.
