The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region around 4pm just after Sydney was rocked by the change, which carried wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour.
Parts of Newcastle and Port Stephens were without power as a result of the storm.
The Bureau predicted that strong wind areas would contract to coastal regions as the evening progressed.
On Monday, Maitland can expect a much milder day, with temperatures expected between 19 and 26 degrees. There's a slight chance of an early-morning shower or thunderstorm.
