More than 100 people packed the Beresfield North Chapel for the funeral last Monday.
Mr Birrell established the Tony Cant franchise at Thornton more than 20 years ago and the Medowie office five years later.
“Through his passion and drive to succeed in life, he really wanted to be his own boss,” his son and Medowie office licensee John Birrell said.
Known as Rossco to his friends and family, Mr Birrell played representative rugby and toured the world before he played for South Sydney Rabbitohs with moderate success.
At age 19, he pursued a career as a police officer and was stationed in Kings Cross. Stints as a hotel manager, publican and a radio station marketing manager followed.
“He had tried the hotel and pub game with little success, but real estate resonated with his ambitious, enthusiastic and vibrant personality,” John said.
“He ended up setting up two great little businesses with the help of his boss at the time and long-term mate Tony Cant, who saw that Rossco was a go getter.”
Ross Birrell is survived by his devoted wife Denise and children, John and Katie.
