Formed in 2011, the All Saints College St Peter's Campus all boys choir “Mancellin” has forged ahead to foster and nurture the confidence of young men.
And now – with the magic of Fleetwood Mac propelling them forth – the boys will take centre stage at next month’'s Catholic schools' spectacular DioSounds.
“The idea behind the all boys choir was to pack it full of male teachers from the school (including former NRL player Shane Whereat), give the boys confidence and go from there,” choir director Michelle Burgess said.
“But the hardest thing is getting them there and convincing them I’m not going to let them make a fool of themselves.”
But with rock anthems including Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way and Journey’s iconic Keep On Believin' included in their repertoire, the choir has had no problem attracting members.
“This is the only all boys choir in the region and I think they quite like the girl factor aswell,” Mrs Burgess said.
“But it does help that it’s a boys’ only group and they love singing together and when they get to know the pieces and each other they really break down the walls.
“They really love it and they have the best time and we’re just really looking forward to DioSounds.”
DioSounds is a presentation of musical items from 11 Catholic secondary schools in the Maitland-Newcastle diocese. The students will showcase their wares at the Civic Theatre, Newcastle, on June 4.
