Human love for a canine companion can bring out the best in us, while disdain for a dog can turn man or woman into a true beast.
In recent times, Maitland and the Hunter have seen the best and worst of the relationships shared by the four- and two-legged.
Earlier this year the nation was shocked and appalled by the criminal behaviour of Nathan Thompson, who was caught in the act of bludgeoning nine puppies to death at Kurri Kurri.
Community outrage was palpable over the offence and the justice system placed Thompson behind bars for his crimes.
Five months on, the Hunter rejoices in celebration of the bond between a dog and his human.
News that Rutherford’s Mark Woodbury ran through flames inside his burning home to save the life of his beloved German shepherd-cross, Ditch, spread like wildfire.
The story of Mr Woodbury’s love and bravery, and of Ditch’s survival, went viral across print, radio, websites and social media.
On the Mercury’s Facebook page, the story of Mark and Ditch reached almost 30,000 people, was shared more than 60 times and attracted 550 likes.
There have been offers of donations to cover veterinary bills, offers of financial assistance for Mr Woodbury and his family, and even the offer of free meals from a cafe.
People have also come forward to share their own part in the dramatic rescue. Today’s front page tells of the young veterinary nurse and the paramedic who were crucial to Ditch’s survival.
That’s a whole lot of love.
