NBN Co, which is responsible for the rollout, has tended to make use of fixed wireless networks where populations are less dense, in place of fibre to the node and fibre to the premises.
Fixed wireless systems and it infrastructure are generally cheaper to implement.
“This is really about bridging the digital divide and ensuring everyone has access to a fast and reliable
broadband service no matter where they chose to live,” NBN Co spokesman Tony Gibbs said.
NBN Co has started talks with Maitland City Council about the rollout and will give residents a say on services at a community information session on July 28.
“While we’ve talked to the council previously about the NBN network in the region, we think it’s important that the community is given a chance to ask questions and provide input,” Mr Gibbs said.
“This is exciting for the residents and businesses in the area as they’re some of the first in the country to begin the process of getting fast and reliable broadband.”
The NBN community information session will run from 3pm until 6pm at Lorn Park Bowling Club on July 28 and people are encouraged to drop in at any time between those hours.
