The work will focus on the Maitland railway station commuter car park and the western end of Athel D’Ombrain Drive.
Stage one is expected to be complete in mid 2016.
Project manager Greg Blaze said the first stage of work would involve excavation and reconstruction of the train station car park as well as road and drainage upgrades on Athel D’Ombrain Drive.
“This means that from [Thursday] there will be some road works in the area for the remainder of the project,” he said.
“Traffic diversions are in place starting this week and warning and detour signs have been installed to direct traffic through and around the work site.
“Council is asking commuters to please take care when driving in the area and follow the directions of traffic controllers.”
The $15 million project is expected to improve public transport traffic access to central Maitland and cater for commuters with a mix of transit-oriented facilities and destination spaces.
The mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore, said the improved infrastructure would attract investment into the precinct and support affordable housing in central Maitland.
“This is great news and it’s the start of another large project that will help revitalise central Maitland,” he said.
