This year marks a slight change of plans with the Men’s Shed tackling the cubby build themselves rather than simply hosting and assisting the Lions Club.
Men’s Shed manager Ted Borradaile said the members of his organisation were more than happy to lend a hand to the Lions.
“The cubbies make a big difference,” he said.
“Where we can help, we will always do our best.”
The cubby house raffle has raised almost $200,000 since it began in 1997.
Lions Club project supervisor Bob Baird said the funds were redistributed to local programs and charities.
“It’s one of our main projects, we sell about 7000 tickets and raise about $12,000 each year for local projects,” he said. “It varies, who receives funding each year, but we’ve donated to countless local charities and programs that we see doing great work in our community.”
The raffle is drawn on December 22 so the Lions have time to deliver the cubby house to the lucky family by Christmas Eve.
“Most of the people who buy tickets and win are grandparents who want to win for their grandkids,” Mr Baird said.
“We get our flooring donated and materials at lower prices – local businesses always do well for us.”
The Lions Club cubby is the second playhouse the shed has built in the last month. The first was donated to Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle.
