Thornton Church of Christ pastor and The Paddock’s co-organiser Damien Parks arrived at his church, which backs onto the garden, on Monday morning and found the shed had been broken into sometime on Sunday night.
A two-stroke Victor lawnmower, an air blower, drink fridge and some new yard tools were missing.
“It’s disappointing because they were community tools, they were used by people who wanted to help with the garden,” Mr Parks said.
The shed, donated by Bunnings to help the garden initiative, had been secured with high-grade, coded padlocks that meant the thieves had to pull the entire shed door off to gain access.
Mr Parks said that despite feelings of violation, the gardeners remained positive and resolute to carry out their mission to beautify Thornton.
“Most people have said they actually hope those who stole the tools really needed them,” he said.
“We don’t want people to have their faith shaken in this community, it’s a beautiful place.
“Since we’ve been engaging with Thornton we’ve only had positive experiences. We’re not discouraged and no one should be.”
The community garden relies solely on donated equipment and labour.
Organisers are renewing calls for donations and fresh faces as they continue to move ahead. Police are investigating the crime and urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.
