Born in Mudgee in 1942, Proctor became involved with Maitland Basketball Association when his two youngest sons started playing socially at Maitland PCYC.
The former builder served as a volunteer, team manager, board member, vice-president, maintenance manager, mentor, project manager for construction of Maitland Federation Centre, canteen operator and the association’s bus driver.
Association vice-chair Stacy Jacobs said he was the epitome of Mustang pride.
“He was so hands-on, even as chairman,” she said.
“He was so instrumental in the establishment of the stadium and physically helped build it. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him.”
Proctor’s funeral will be on Saturday at 12.30 at St Peter’s Anglican Church, East Maitland, and the Mustangs will hold a minute’s silence before their home game against Hornsby that night.
Proctor is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret, six children and 16 grandchildren.
