Hunter racing legend Robert Thompson has indicated that he will ride at Cessnock in preference to the Gosford Anzac Day race meeting.
Course manager Steve Tapp reports that the track will be in top order on Anzac Day.
It is a non-TAB meeting and the Anzac Day crowd is normally the biggest of the year at Cessnock.
Racegoers attending the meeting will have facilities to bet on the corresponding Randwick meeting and other interstate meetings around the country.
The support locally in the sponsorship of the day has been outstanding. Jurds Real Estate is the major sponsor of the Anzac Day meeting.
Other sponsors include the Cessnock Leagues Club, East Cessnock Bowling Club and former Advertiser editor Bruce Wilson.
The feature race on the program is the John Cleaves Memorial.
John, a well-known Cessnock solicitor, was chairman of the Wine Country Race Club, a director of the Newcastle Jockey Club and one time treasurer of Cessnock Leagues Club.
The John Cleaves Memorial has been held on Anzac Day since his passing.
Bruce Wilson sponsors a race on Anzac Day in memory of his late daughter, Amy.
