Robert Brain: an Autobiographical Tapestry, Frugal Forest and Silence Equals Consent | Variations on Theme of Strings will all open at the gallery this Saturday.
Blue Mountains based Robert Brain’s prolific tapestry practice explores themes such as homo erotica, art history and gender politics.
The exhibition is filled with surprises and humour – expect the unexpected.
Brain’s tapestries function as photo albums or travel diaries, documenting his diverse life experiences.
His designs often borrow from traditional works, adding his own twist to create contemporary adaptations.
Created by Bryony Anderson, Rae Howell and Chay Khansome, Frugal Forest takes the viewer on a journey through a rainforest.
Trees, palms, and vines vanish into darkness overhead, and grasses, ferns and fungi flourish all around.
The space is filled with the sounds of creatures welcoming the dawn. Take a seat on a rock to listen to the evening chorus.
Everything in the exhibition has been crafted from everyday materials that would have otherwise gone to the dump. In the Frugal Forest, nothing is wasted and every scrap is an opportunity.
Three years and over 5,000 hours of handwork have gone into this collection, as well as input from scientists, artists, musicians, schools and the community across the Mid North Coast.
Elizabeth Maxwell’s Silence Equals Consent questions assumptions about the underlying motivations of authority figures whereby the rights of the individual are compromised.
The works combine traditional quilt making with digital print innovations. Much of the fabric is donated, with in-fill fabric bought at discount prices.
Maxwell is a member of the Mid North Coast Community Quilters Group, whose work is donated to a diversity of charity groups and organisations.
Robert Brain: an Autobiographical Tapestry and Silence Equals Consent will be on display until November 20, and Frugal Forest finishes on October 9.
