Recyclable glass and plastic bottles are being put on the learning agenda at Maitland Community Preschool after students recycled 212 bottles.

A Charlie and Lola Look After Your Planet story book inspired the preschool to get their hands out of the mud and put them to good use by focusing on sustainability.
It only took two weeks for forty of Maitland Community Preschool students to accumulate over two hundred bottles.
Just like in the Charlie and Lola story, a fruit tree is planted with every 100 bottles recycled.
Preschool teacher Jillian Compton said planting the sustainability seeds in the children while they’re young makes the parents more aware too.
“The children are so excited about recycling. One of the little boys told me that he told his dad to chug his beer so he could recycle it,” she said.
“It’s not just about being sustainable, but it’s also about teaching the children how to count the bottles and sort them into various types and sizes.”
“Through this project, students get to see their hard work turn into something good. An empty carton of milk today might turn into a pot plant holder tomorrow.
