The two went within a whisker of each on the clock as heat winners and progress through to the maiden final over 450 metres this Thursday.
Chevy Bandit won the first heat for Butterwick owner-trainer Jody Manuel in an impressive 25.05 seconds and there were plenty of cheers from punters who snapped up the $2 on offer.
The black dog jumped from box three and mustered good speed on the bend to power home in the straight and beat the Louise McGee-trained Mighty Ruben (25.95) by twelve and three quarter lengths.
Wild Walter was almost as impressive for Sawyers Gully trainer Terry Priest after working hard from box six in the third heat to clock 25.07s and beat the Lindsay Davis-trained Schnapskey (25.25s) by two and a half lengths.
Bula Top Shelf ran third for Jamie Saunders and also earned a spot in the final.
Shakes won the second heat for Lochinvar trainer Gary Ernst, who is probably better known as the regular lure driver at The Gardens track.
Shakes was slowly away from box one but managed to hold the rail and take the lead into the corner and hold on to beat the Christine Proctor-trained Danisie (25.54s) by three quarters of a length. The Peter Akers-trained La Montenara (25.69s) finished third to grab a spot in the final.
Good luck to all runners in this Thursday’s final, which carries an extra $1000 prizemoney thanks to the Ladbrokes jackpot for November.
