“Last year when it looked like there would not be a major community carols event in the area we stepped up at the last minute to offer an evening of Christmas celebration,” Archdeacon David Battrick, parish priest of East Maitland, said.
“It was such a great event that we have decided to make it an annual fixture in our region’s Christmas calendar.”

Father David will be joined on stage by Maitland City Choir, Maitland Brass Band, Maitland Pipes and Drums and Saint Peter’s Junior Choir as they lead the crowds in community carol singing. Once again a very special guest will be arriving during the evening with the help of the East Maitland Rural Fire Service.
Opera singers from Mark Bradley International, who delighted the crowds last year with their surprise appearance, will also be returning to perform during the evening.
“Last year we were amazed by the number of people who came to join us to celebrate Christmas together,” Father David said. “We have a large site, and there is plenty of room for more friends to be with us this year.”
The event will be officially opened by Mayor Peter Blackmore at 6pm on Friday, December 16.
There will be an opportunity for people to purchase food and soft drinks on site, as well as other familyfriendly stalls, and people are asked to come prepared to make a gold-coin donation during the evening to support local community projects.
“Saint Peter’s Church, our beautiful heritage Parish Church, will provide the backdrop for a relaxed, fun and entertaining evening,” Father David said. “We invite the whole local community to come and join us. I look forward to welcoming you.”
Christmas celebrations continue at Saint Peter’s Church on Christmas Eve with the return of donkeys and other animals in the Church at the 4pm and 6pm Family Christmas Services, and Traditional Christmas Masses will be held in the Church at 8.30pm and 11.30pm, and at 8.30am on Christmas Day.
