Largs brothers Tom and Jack Newman were set to race in the Gift Hotel Arthur Postle Handicap, a 70m dash, but Tom was a late scratching.
Jack came second in his heat, securing a semi final spot.
Fellow Lower Hunter runner, Thornton’s Jake Ryder, ran a scorching 7.75 to claim first spot in his heat and lock up a semi final position.
Ryder and Newman faced off in the same heat in the semi finals, with Newman narrowly missing out a grand final placing by coming in second.
Ryder finished further back in the pack at fifth.
Maitland-trained former Olympian Joshua Ross was unsuccessful in his attempt to become the first person ever to win the Stawell Gift three times, following his wins in 2003 and 2005, coming third in his heat.
