Counterfeit notes are back on the scene in Maitland with another fake $50 bill picked up at Woolworths Beresfield on Sunday.

Someone paid for their items with the counterfeit currency between 4pm and 6pm.

The fake note was noticed by a manager who was going through the takings later on.

The pickup comes after eight fake notes were found in a five day period at various Maitland businesses at the end of February and start of March.

Reports of the fake notes had diminished since then until this one resurfaced on the weekend.

Police are urging people to remain on the look out when handling notes, particularly $50 bills.

The telltale sign is often the window and stars on the bottom corner of the note.
