The game was dominated by the defences with Maitland captain Carl Thornton leading the way for the Magpies.
The Magpies best chance came through Ryan Clarke who was unable to convert a one-on-one chance against Magic keeper Paul Bitz.
The Magpies changed their structures with Matt Comerford and Clarke playing up front with the loss of Josh Dutton-Black to injury for the year.
Magic’s Kale Bradbery had his team’s best chance but he too was unable to convert.
“The game was played pretty much between the two 18s, there were very few chances,” Maitland football operations manager Mick Mirisch said.
“Both defences were very much on top. Liam Thornton won players’ player for us, he had a great game and was well supported by Carl Thornton, Alex Reed and Grant Brown up back.
“Matt Thompson was tireless again for us and is showing that he is overcome his injury concerns from earlier in the year.
“The game had the intensity of a derby clash. There were plenty of yellow cards shown, probably about 10 between the two teams.
“You obviously always want to win but to we’re happy to get a point from the match, especially given how tight it is at the top of the table.”
Maitland drops to fifth, one point outside the top four, replaced by Lambton Jaffas who beat Lake Macquarie 2-0. The Weston Bears had a 1-2 loss to Hamilton.
