Blacks co-coach Ryan McCormack said Ulberg, 19, had been rewarded for a break-out year in which he had performed at Colts representative level and in lower grades at Maitland.
“He has come off the bench a couple of times in first grade, but this is his first time in the starting team,” McCormack said.
“He is an exciting young player and we believe he is ready to test his mettle in first grade.
“We think he will acquit himself very well. He has a big future and for us as a club it’s fantastic to see our juniors coming through like this.”
The Blacks have introduced several young players to their line-up this season, with Ulberg’s NSW Colts teammate Ben Wood becoming a regular in the absence of star forwards Travis Brooke and Michael Howell. Jock Barry and Pat Armstrong have also stepped up.
