It’s coming this way later this month, all in the name of a good cause – so get your bling ready.
On August 25, The Umbrella Foundation’s Maitland chairperson Linda Harwood has organised a fundraising celebration at Marcellin Park, themed Celebrating Nepal: an evening of colour, dance and feasting.
While the Umbrella Foundation raises money to help children in Nepal, this event is also designed to help the state’s struggling farming community.
“I don’t think anyone could see those images on television of starving farm animals and paddocks turned to dust and not be moved by it,” Ms Harwood said.
“So we want to be able to help. We hope to raise enough money to be able to donate a decent percentage to the farmers.”
Why Bollywood?
“Last year we had a Gatsby-themed fundraiser and it was a terrific night, so why not Bollywood?” she said.
“I’ve seen weddings and celebrations in Nepal and they have that wonderful Bollywood feel about them, which is always fun … full of life and vitality.
“So I think it’s a good way to enlist locals to the team while having a lot of fun.”
In keeping with the Nepal-Indian feel, Ravi from the popular High Street eatery Zaffran will look after the food.
Ms Harwood also wants to help support a group of local tradies who are planning to put a different spin on assisting the farmers.
Joel Walters has organised a team of 27 tradies to travel two hours west of Gunnedah to help out around the farms.
“They’re loading up their utes and heading out, and they will offer their skills – it might be gutters, or fences around the farms, electrical work … whatever is required,” she said.
“I’ve known Joel all his life and he’s a terrific guy. He feels the farmers are under so much pressure and stress that these sort of things can get overlooked. So this would be invaluable.
“I think it’s a terrific idea.”
Celebrating Nepal will be held at Marcellin Park from 7pm to 11.30pm on Saturday, August 25.
Tickets are $75 per person or $700 for a table of 10.
