This meeting will seek to identify key events and themes which have shaped the area over that period.
The discussion will be titled: What Happened in Maitland? Events and Processes That Shaped the Development of the Maitland Area, 1818-1918. Matters that could be discussed include:
- Contact between the first Europeans and the Wonnarua people
- Land clearance
- The attempt to create a government town at East Maitland
- The coming of coastal shipping
- The development of the railways
- Floods and the development of flood mitigation
"I thought why don't we have a discussion about what's changed the place and what's made it what it is," said Chas Keys, who organises the monthly talks.
"I've cut it down to 1818 to 1918 and if it works and we get people to come along we can do the second stage."
Those attending will be asked for a $5 donation to cover the costs of refreshments. The Society can be contacted at maitlandhistorical@gmail.com or phone 0438 623299.
