Two days after the Mackay-trained Flying Bazza won the Maitland regional final, Get It Gizmo proved a class above at Newcastle over 515m as the $2.60 favourite. The pair qualified for semi-finals at Wentworth Park on October 11.
Initially a reserve for The Gardens heat last week, Get It Gizmo was set to race in the series at Goulburn. However, the scratching of kennelmate Aston Duke gave him a spot at The Gardens.
He was third in the heat from box four but had a better run in the final from the same draw. Held up briefly approaching the first turn, Get It Gizmo raced to second behind Federal Lilly along the back straight before taking over on the home bend and winning in 29.25 seconds.
The Peter Lagiogiane-trained Federal Lilly was second. Miley Nismo, for Brandy Hill trainer Nichole Mason, was third and defending Million Dollar Chase champion Mystic Riot (Lagiogiane) was fourth to also qualify for the semis.
Mackay expects to give Get It Gizmo, which joined his team from Victoria for the Million Dollar Chase, to have a warm-up run at Wentworth Park next Saturday.
"He goes good this dog, he's only young, a novice," Mackay told GRNSW.
"I don't think the circumference of this track here at The Gardens is ideal for his way of going.
"I think when we get to Wenty, a little bit harder run and a bigger circumference, he really might let go, but that was pretty impressive tonight. Not bad.
"He's run home in 11.93s, and it's very rarely you see that ... that's crazy to break 12, especially when you never led."
Mackay was relieved to see Get It Gizmo have a relatively clear run after copping interference twice in his heat.
"He still got a few little red lights tonight, not green lights, but once he balanced up and you let him get through his gears ... he's pretty special this dog," he said.
Ronny, for Greta trainer James Porter, also qualified with third at Maitland.
Cee Jay's Boy and Black Forge were the others to progress at Maitland.
