The annual family focused event attracts around 3000 people to Tucker Park and in previous years has featured both a 9pm and midnight fireworks display.
This year the high fire danger has seen the Paterson Rotary Club make the decision to cancel the fireworks display.
The Rotary Club will tonight discuss this year's event at its annual general meeting.
"We are not necessarily cancelling the event at this stage," said Rotary Club of Paterson President Catherine Varcoe.
"The thing that will sway this is mainly whether the sponsors and the vendors still want to be a part of the event.
"We can't run it without their support."
Ms Varcoe said there had been wide ranging discussion regarding the fireworks before the board took advice from various sources, including the NYE festival committee.
"Subsequent to that consultation process, advice was received from Dungog Shire Council following discussions which had taken place between Hunter Region mayors.
"That advice was to cancel the fireworks in the interest of community and property safety."
The event which has run for more than 15 years features children's rides, food stalls and a live band with families from Maitland, Newcastle, Sydney, Port Macquarie and Blue Mountains attending.
"It's a big family favourite. It's family orientated with a very pleasant atmosphere," said Ms Varcoe.
Ms Varcoe said the response from the community regarding the fireworks cancellation had been overwhelmingly positive.
"I can't believe the response I have had, we would not have been a very popular club if we had said we would go ahead," she said.
"People are really anxious in the community, they have been asking for several weeks if we were running the fireworks, people are nervous about the fires and we don't want to contribute to that at all."
Last week firefighters battled to control a bush fire of 376 hectares in Martins Creek Road at Paterson.
