But with restrictions starting to ease, we can now get out of the house and start moving again.
So, with that in mind, we've come up with five things you an do this weekend to remind you just what a good place we get to call home.
Maitland Gaol - Maitland Gaol, the longest continuously operating correctional institution in New South Wales, has reopened for self guided audio tours. By downloading the Maitland Gaol app, visitors are able to take in one of three available audio tours whilst making their way around the site. Perhaps fittingly, there is an Escaping Maitland Gaol option which some can relate to after a period of isolation.
MRAG - Having reopened on 4 June, Maitland Regional Art Gallery is now able to welcome a limited number of visitors each day. Book a free ticket online, and take in the Gallery's new exhibitions in a unique and intimate setting. Exhibitions include art from the Gallery collection as well as others from touring collections.
Walka Water Works - With great weather predicted for Saturday, there's no better time to grab a picnic basket and soak up the sun at Walka Water Works. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the barbeque facilities and the children's playground area opposite the old pumping station which was built in 1887 and remains one of the largest 19th century industrial complexes in the Hunter Valley. You can also take a walk along one of four trails on the 112 hectare site and try and spot a variety of different wildlife.
Morpeth - Get the family together and take a drive out to the historic township of Morpeth. A visit to Morpeth is a journey through narrow laneways, sandstone gutters and footpaths into heritage buildings where you'll discover unique shopping, artisan treasures and delightful treats. Take in the views of the Hunter River with a coffee at Illalaung Park, or kicking a ball with the kids at Queens Wharf.
Country Escape - If you need to get away, take a short drive to the country. In 15 minutes the city street scape is replaced by rolling green hills as you arrive at the village of Lochinvar. Take a turn down Luskintyre Road and you will arrive at Tranquil Vale Vineyard, which produces authentic award winning wines and is the only working vineyard in Maitland.
