Whitlock fired a Grand Slam record 20 maximums (180s) on his way winning the last three legs of the match and end the Dutchman's bid for a fourth Grand Slam crown.
Affectionately known as the Wizard, Whitlock threw a double eight to secure the 16-15 win this morning (AEST) at Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
Whitlock will now face Portugual's Jose De Sousa in the semi-finals on Tuesday at 6am (AEST).
The win continues an amazing recent record for the Australian against Van Gerwen, having beaten him in the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix. But it wasn't always the case with the Dutchman winning their previous 15 meetings.
De Sousa defeated Michael Smith to advance to the last four.
In the other semi-final, James Wade takes on Dimitri Van den Bergh after they saw off Damon Heta and Nathan Aspinall respectively in the quarters.
