Gooch has carded six birdies and an eagle to move to 12 under, with five holes to play in Saturday's second round at the Grange Golf Club.
The 31-year-old is eight strokes clear of American Pat Perez and Austria's Bernd Wiesberger, at 10 under.
A group of big-names including Cameron Smith, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka are in the chasing pack.
Australia's Smith has posted six birdies and a bogey at the sandbelt course in Adelaide's west and is among a half-dozen golfers at eight under.
Compatriots Marc Leishman (two under), Matt Jones (one over) and Jed Morgan (five over) are battling to make inroads.
Smith's fellow major winner Mickelson ran hot with five birdies in a six-hole stretch and is in a batch including Koepka at nine under.
Spain's Sergio Garcia (five under) visited a bar on one hole and bushes the next. The incidents after wayward drives came as he dropped two early shots.
