The Bears defeated the Northern NSW Football National Premier League leaders 4-3 despite trailing 2-0 early in the first half at Magic Park.
Over at St John Oval and the Bulldogs were shut out by the Butcher Boys in Newcastle Rugby League action.
In the other Real NRL game to go ahead on Sunday the Cessnock Goannas ended the unbeaten run of Lakes United with a 32-18 victory over the Seagulls.
SATURDAY: The Maitland Pickers, Maitland Blacks, Maitland Magpies and Maitland Mustangs were all defeated in their respective first grade competitions on Saturday.
The Pickers went down 30-18 to three-time defending Newcastle Rugby League champions Western Suburbs at Maitland Sportsground.
The Blacks lost 47-21 against The Waratahs at Waratah Oval in Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union.
In the Northern NSW Football National Premier League the Magpies were beaten 2-1 by title holders Lambton Jaffas at Arthur Edden Oval.
And the Mustangs were no match for Basketball NSW Waratah Championship League leaders Manly Warringah, thumped 110-70 at Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre.
The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs (league) and Weston Bears (football) play on Sunday afternoon.
The Maitland Rams (hockey) have the weekend off.
