The most capped A-League player and Newcastle Jets premiership winner will be the guest speaker at the 2014 Maitland Sportsperson of the Year awards next month.
The announcement for the March 6 event at Club Maitland City comes as the 32-year-old settles into the Hunter region after relocating from western Sydney in preparation for the Magpies season.
Thompson will be the star signing in black and white for 2015 as the club returns to the Northern NSW top flight competition after 12 years in First Division.
Thompson has begun training with the squad and attended the Magpies “Foot-Ball” event at the Maitland Town Hall earlier this month.
The season kicks off after Easter with Maitland away to South Cardiff at Ulinga Oval on April 12 before hosting Broadmeadow Magic at Cooks Square Park the following week.
Meanwhile, Thompson will be conducting junior coaching clinics for juniors from under 10s to under 15s.
The program kicks off at Cooks Square Park on Wednesday and will run for five weeks.
Spots are limited and registrations can be made by visiting the Magpies website at www.maitlandfc.com.au.
Tickets for the 2014 Maitland Sportsperson of the Year awards night can be purchased at Club Maitland City.
The Maitland Mercury, PRD nationwide, The Good Guys at East Maitland and Club Maitland City are the event’s major sponsors.
This will be the 51st anniversary of the awards, with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Marguerite Ruygrok the inaugural winner in 1963.
