The council has endorsed the Association of Mining Related Councils to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding, which will enable opportunities to engage with the mining industry and help secure better outcomes for the community.
This could include contributions for local roads and infrastructure.
Cessnock mayor Cr Bob Pynsent welcomed the move.
“Our community has a long association with the mining industry and this is an opportunity to develop closer working relationships, particularly in relation to planning agreements,” he said.
“Council will be more involved in the decision making process with a view to improve outcomes for our community.”
The document, drafted in collaboration with NSW Minerals Council, aims to promote transparency and increase efficiency.
