The business was originally known as Atkins Nursery when two brothers started the business in Cooks Hill before it moved to Merewether.
The Nursery, now on Darby Street, has a strong family tradition. Managing direction Scott Sharpe took up the business after his parents took over the business in 1984.
"I think Sharpe's is different than other nurseries because we are very much a family business," Mr Sharpe said.
"There is always a family member here to look after the customers."
A changing culture toward gardening has provided some challenges for the nursery, but Mr Sharpe said his approach to business was about finding something to be excited about.
"Stay as excited as you were the first couple of weeks you were open. You have to find something you are excited about in business.
"We just want to keep on doing what we have been doing and try to do it as well as we have done it in the past."
