To celebrate and encourage community participation, Maitland City Council is giving away 1500 native tubestock to local residents to plant in their own yards on Wednesday.
"By participating in National Tree Day the community can connect with the environment of which they are a part and assist in planting an area of habitat and food source for native birds and animals," council's acting environment manager Elfi Blackburn said.
"By undertaking plantings in your yard you are assisting in creating habitat for our native animals and providing a refuge for yourself to enjoy."
The seedling giveaway will be held at Walka Water Works on Wednesday from 12pm, and will continue until all seedlings have been given away.
Each resident will be able to take away five native tubestock as a part of the giveaway event.
Council reminds residents that they can only collect seedlings for one property and proof of residency will be required.
Information will also be available to the community at the event on council's latest grant project for protecting Endangered Ecological Community Lower Hunter Spotted Gum Ironbark Forest.
