Earlier this month, Maitland City councillors approved a report proposing the cancellation of this year's Bitter and Twisted but New Year's Eve and Australia Day celebrations for 2022.
The council report said the coronavirus pandemic and public health orders had continued to "significantly impact Council's flagship event program in 2021".
These cancelled events include Maitland Aroma, Hunter Valley Steamfest and the Riverlights Multicultural Festival.
As part of the report, council officers will investigate different site and scale options for New Year's Eve celebrations and report back to Council on October 26 with recommendations based on Public Health Orders at that time.
"The current public health restrictions have resulted in the cancellation of a number of Council's flagship events and have made planning for future events increasingly difficult, however with events expected to play an important role in reconnecting our community and the city's economic recovery it is important that Council continue to support events as public health restrictions begin to ease," the report read.
"The recommendations within this report seek to alter and modify future events, based on expected changes to public health restrictions rather than the cancellation of events, and seeks to reintroduce the Summer In Maitland program at a time when it is hoped the community will be able to enjoy greater freedoms and the ability to reconnect."
Council also supported the reallocation of existing funding from the cancelled events and use of COVID 19 response and recovery reserve funding as well as the return of a 2021/22 Summer in Maitland Program.
