The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the peak in its flooding update on Saturday morning.
The statement said the river was now at 9.01 metres and falling. The river is expected to fall below the moderate flood level of 8.90 metres on Saturday.
The Hunter River at Raymond Terrace is expected to remain just below the minor flood level of 2.50 metres.

The Hunter River in Maitland is near its peak, the Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed.
It comes as flood waters upstream around Singleton begin to recede.
BOM data shows the Hunter River at the Belmore Bridge was 9.35 metres and rising at 4.30pm on Friday.
Meanwhile upstream at Singleton the river was 10.02 metres and falling.
At Greta it was 12.39 metres and rising at 4.30pm on Friday and at Oakhampton it was 10.72 metres and steady.
BOM believes the river will peak at the Belmore Bridge around 9.40 metres with moderate flooding of low-lying areas.
The Hunter River at Raymond Terrace is expected to remain below the minor flood level of 2.5 metres.
Moderate flooding is still happening along the Wollombi Brook at Bulga. It was at 4.28 metres and falling on Friday afternoon.
There are many road closures around the Maitland area due to flooding.
