A street has been named after him, a statue of the boxing legend stands in East Maitland . . . and now a beer has been named in his honour.
Beer connoisseur and club manager of the Commercial Hotel at Morpeth Jayse Tasker will launch the Les Darcy Big Hitter special bitter along with four others at the venue tomorrow night.
Through the assistance of brewer Dave Allen, Mr Tasker has had five different beers brewed since April and each one holds a name that is meaningful to the area including Mullet Run, representing the mullet in the Hunter River, and Close Call, a reference to the town’s flood history and Edward Close, a Morpeth magistrate and NSW Legislative Council member in the 1800s.
“The other beers have names that relate to Morpeth,” Mr Tasker said.
“We wanted to do it to celebrate Morpeth because it is such an individual place and has such a good character.
“Les Darcy was a legend so it was fitting to name one of the beers after him.”
The hotel has a traditional brewery on site which allows them to produce beers with all natural ingredients.
The beer carbonates itself within the cask and creates its own full bodied flavour.
Each beer will be available on tap and in the coming weeks will be also available in bottles.
Mr Tasker designed artwork for the labels that have an historical feel and tie the beers in with the history of the town.
The launch, which begins at 6pm and is open to the public, will include a German-style wheat beer to celebrate Octoberfest, feature people in costume and canapés that match each beer’s personality.
