Thousands flocked to Maitland to catch a glimpse of the World’s most daring pilots and rarest aircraft at the 2017 Hunter Valley Airshow over the weekend.
The show featured elite stunt pilots, rare warbirds, state-of-the-art military aircraft and unusual flying machines. The airshow was was organised by renowned stunt-pilot Paul Bennett, who twice performed his heart-stopping feat of flying his plane under a motorcycle while it jumps through the air.
“This is World class stuff,” Co-organiser Jeff Blunt said. “We’re very happy with the displays, the planes and the flying.”
There was one issue during preparation when the landing gear of a WWII-era Corsair plane skidded along the runway after a landing-gear issue. The pilot walked away unharmed.
On Saturday afternoon a solemn hush fell over the airfield as a missing-man formation honoured Gerard Beiboer. Mr Beiboer, a member of the Hunter’s aviation community, was killed when his stunt plane crashed days after the 2015 show.
