Built for a judge complete with a convict jail, the stunningly restored circa 1830 property has hit the market with a price guide of $2 million.
Set on five acres in Regent Street, Maitland, the mansion appears comparatively modest from the road.
But stepping inside reveals a residence opulent in every way.
Features of the six-bedroom, five-bathroom home include enormous cedar doors, domed ceilings, solid brass fittings, tall doors and windows and antique chandeliers.
Cedar panelling was reportedly rescued from the former Federal Government offices in Phillip Street in Sydney including a bookcase from the office of former Prime Ministers and installed to form a library.
There is also a glazed conservatory and gallery with cast iron balustrading.
The unique property with sprawling private gardens is being used by current owners as tourist accommodation.
Cain Beckett of Jurds Real Estate is marketing it through expressions of interest.
“It’s rare for a number of reasons, one because it’s rural but in residential area, and secondly because it’s been renovated to a standard and it’s consistently architecturally correct,” Mr Beckett said.
Mr Beckett called it one of the “best restoration projects” he’d ever seen.
“It’s a unique mix of historic home and acreage,” he said.
The glamour doesn’t stop with the building, with Mr Beckett saying “the garden is one of the best residential gardens I’ve ever seen".
“It’s a special house," he said.
The $2 million price tag puts the property in the company of some of Maitland’s most expensive homes ever.
Earlier this year historic Lorn property Warrane was sold after calls for expressions of interest between $2 million and $2.5 million.
Selling agent of that property, Rhonda Nyquist of PRD nationwide, later confirmed that Warrane was “towards the upper end” of the most expensive residential homes sold in Maitland’s history.
The demand for Lower Hunter property continues to skyrocket, with a 248-lot subdivision at Greta the latest major land release.
