Both have been CEO of Club Maitland City, both have children who attend the same school and both live in the same street. But that’s where the similarities end.
When it comes to local rugby league, the pair are arch-enemies. Paul, Cessnock Leagues Club CEO, supports the Goannas. Ian, CEO of Club Maitland City which is poised to merge with Maitland Leagues Club, backs the Pickers.
The men came together at Maitland’s No. 1 Sportsground on Saturday for the grudge match between their teams which resulted in the Pickers annihilating the Goannas 36-0.
“I think Paul has a leg each side of the fence, coming from Maitland and working for the club in Cessnock,” Ian said. “So I didn’t rib him too much about the win.”
Paul said he and Ian are local league rivals but mates after the full-time whistle. “As a kid I followed Maitland but today the interest is with Cessnock. It was a great afternoon and the new sportsground is a top set up,”
