Deputy mayor Sally Halliday will raise a motion at the May 22 council meeting for council to approach both teams to entice them to play the proposed trial game in Maitland this October ahead of the 2018/19 season.
The motion comes off the back of the Jets’ massive turnaround in the 2017/18 A-League season, in which they finished runner-up after collecting the wooden spoon the year before.
Ms Halliday said the Jets’ recent achievements combined with Maitland Sportsground successfully hosting a sold-out NRL trial match between Newcastle Knights and the Parramatta Eels in February would lead to a great event.
“What a perfect time to encourage them to play at our recently upgraded sporting facility,” she said.
“The fact that the Knights/Eels trial match was a sell-out highlights the confidence from the community in Maitland hosting large scale sporting events.”
Ms Halliday’s motion will be seconded by Liberal Councillor Mitchell Griffin.
