Well, they’ve put two coats on their iconic ugg boots at least.
At 7.30am on Monday morning, Tony and Stephanie Mortel had painters covering the Thornton landmark in the NSW team colours after their Origin series win over Queensland in game two on Sunday.
The Mortels said they loved being part of the Origin excitement leading up to the games, and regularly organised Facebook competitions beforehand.
“Last year the third game was a decider so we said we were going to paint the big ugg boots blue,” Mrs Mortel said.
“We had the painter ready to go just in case and they didn’t get over the line.”
According to Mrs Mortels, everyone loves a good state rivalry.
“Everyone loves a winner,” her husband added.
“It’s a new season for us, a new era for NSW.”
The Mortels, along with the rest of NSW’s supporters, are hoping for a clean sweep from the Blues.
“We’re not footy mad, we just like to get into the spirit of it,” Mrs Mortel said.
“You don’t have to be at the game to experience the great atmosphere and the whole build up to Origin.”
Mr Mortel said the paint stunt was also good for the local economy.
“It gets people talking about what we do and is good for tourism to the Maitland area,” he said.
“It promotes Maitland and the Hunter Valley.”
Anyone wishing to see the big blue ugg boots in person can do so before the end of the 2018 NRL season, when they will return to their usual brown colour scheme.
“Love them or hate them, we’re stuck with them until then,” Mrs Mortel said.
In the meantime, the Mortels are inviting NSW fans from the area to join them at 8.30am Tuesday for their ‘world’s biggest selfie’ attempt near the blue boots.
