At a time when there only seems to be bad news in the media it’s refreshing to take a step back, let your guard down and have a little fun, just as Maitland Councillor Henry Meskauskas did this week.

We wanted to shoot something a little quirky - a photograph with a twist - to mark the start of the swimming season at Maitland pool.
Cr Meskauskas, a former Australian swimming champion who has been recognised with a pool lane at Maitland Aquatic Centre named after him, was the perfect subject.
We scheduled the photograph for 9am Thursday but booked the details in on Wednesday when it was a balmy 30 degrees in Maitland – certainly warm enough for a quick dip.
We wanted Cr Meskauskas to do something out of the box for our picture and being a good sport he obliged. But when Wednesday’s tropical conditions turned arctic, we thought he’d have had a change of heart – not a chance!
With rain, a light breeze and a top of eight degrees, Cr Meskauskas stripped down to his boardies, grabbed a kid’s kick board, donned goggles and a Finding Nemo bathing cap and hammed it up for the camera on the aquatic centre’s splash pad.
We know it’s not breaking news but occasionally it’s nice to make a different kind of splash.
See tomorrow’s Mercury for all the details on the pool’s 2018-2019 season.
