Maitland outdoor pool will open this Saturday, and East Maitland Pool will open on Saturday, October 13.
Councillor Henry Meskauskas, a former Australian swimming champion who has been recognised with a pool lane at Maitland Aquatic Centre named after him, gave the water a test on Thursday.
It comes just in time with Maitland Indoor Pool temporarily closing for maintenance on Sunday until October 12.
The pool needs to be closed for maintenance to the entry ramp, and will need to be emptied before work can be carried out. There will be no learn to swim or aqua programs running during the maintenance period.
Council’s community and recreation manager Laurie D’Angelo said: “Unfortunately this closure is necessary. Maintenance must be done to ensure the pool stays the top class facility it has already proved to be.”
Cr Meskauskas said Maitland Aquatic Centre has gone from strength to strength following the opening of the year-round heated pool. He said just under 36,000 people used the new facility in Winter.
“After all those years of waiting for support for this it has proved to be a success,” Cr Meskauskas said. “An extra two lanes would have been good but it was still money well spent and a huge benefit to the community.”
He said services the pool offers for people with disabilities, rehabilitation, fitness and sports clubs were outstanding.
“Maitland Triathlon Club trains all year round, Beresfield Swimming Club holds Winter meets here and netball and footie players use it for training.”
