The blaze broke out in bushland off Metford Road just after 2pm, with 11 Rural Fire Service crews and two from Fire and Rescue NSW still on scene about 4.30pm.
The fire is burning in the vicinity of Maitland Pistol Club, but is not a threat to people or buildings.
An RFS spokesperson said the fire started near a swamp, making it hard for firefighters to approach by vehicle.
But he said the blaze was being contained.
“The fire intensity is not too bad,” the spokesperson said.
Smoke from the fire has forced the closure of Metford Road between Maize Street and Raymond Terrace Road.
