TWO people had to be cut free from their vehicles and were rushed to hospital after a head-on collision in the Hunter Valley.

The crash occurred about 7.30pm on Sunday on Lake Road, Elrington.
A Toyota Hilux and a Mitsubishi Pajero hit at high speed, causing the ute to roll into a nearby embankment.
Police, paramedics, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Cessnock District Rescue Squad and Fire and Rescue were all called to the scene.
A teenage girl was trapped inside the four-wheel-drive. Her legs were pinned inside the car and she was cut free by rescuers. She suffered chest, leg and pelvic injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
The second person, a 26-year-old man, was conscious and breathing when emergency services arrived. He was trapped inside his car at the bottom of a deep embankment.
He suffered lacerations and was bleeding from his head.
It took longer to extricate him, but eventually he was freed and also taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A male passenger in the 4WD was also taken to hospital to be checked as a precaution, while a second passenger escaped injury.
The road remained closed for several hours while crews worked at the site. Police will now investigate the cause of the crash.
