Retained or on-call firefighters provide a critical service, with their own lives coming second to protecting their community.
For Maitland Fire Station captain Paul Casey, it’s not just a job but a service to the community.
“They say we go in when other people run out. It’s serving the community and being community involved,” he said.
“We don’t just do fires anymore, we do hazmat incidents and floods.”
So do you have what it takes?
Motivation, commitment and a moderate level of fitness are all you need to join the team.
“We are looking for daytime availability,” Captain Casey said.
“It’s Monday to Friday between 6am to 6pm. Positions have opened up, and we are looking to recruit for that specific time period.”
With just 14 firefighters in the books, the Maitland Fire Station is looking for two more members to join the team.
“It takes a lot of teamwork because we live in each other’s pockets. We get calls at anytime – 365 days a year, 24 hours a day,” Captain Casey said.
“We rely on each other. Not only here but the other fire stations in the area.”
