But those on hand to witness Greg ‘Shorty’ Andrews’ inspirational match-winning century at Baddeley Park last week found a new dimension for the word.

In a memorable day for the Greta/Branxton club and the Andrews family, Greg’s two sons – 16-year-old Patrick and 15-year-old Reuben – both made their first grade debuts in what was a first for the club.

Both boys performed creditably, with Patrick bowling very tidily to finish with 2-24 off 7, and Reuben fielding sharply and taking a neat catch at mid-wicket.

But make no mistake, for the second week in a row it was Dad who stole the show. 

In pursuit of 184, Greta/Branxton looked dead and buried at 8-75 in the 19th over.

But fresh off an unbeaten and match-winning 92 from 58 balls a week earlier, 46-year-old veteran Greg showed his true class, blasting nine boundaries and six maximums in a masterful and selfless batting display to steer his side home against all odds in an absolute thriller.

He remained unbeaten once again on 102 off just 74 balls.

The best authors in the world could not have written a better script if they tried.

Greg got to spend some time at the crease with both sons, with his wife and daughter also at the venue to witness the proud occasion.

His inspirational knock was well supported by Indian import Tanveer Singh (21) and a gutsy 9 not out from No.11 Alex Walkling.

The Goannas’ openers were tough to handle, with Zach Sneesby (4-54 off 10) and Andrew Nicolai (4-19 off 10) rattling the Blues’ pegs quite often.

But with wickets falling all around him, Andrews remained composed and confident.

Along the way he showed great faith in his tail-end batting partners as the “Lazarus-like” comeback was becoming more and more a reality.

He brought up his century in the 34th over, then watchfully caressed the third ball of the 35th over through the covers for two to seal victory for the Blues.

Players from both teams respectfully formed a guard of honor as an emotional Andrews and his two sons walked from the field.
